Central Organisation for Railway Electrification (CORE) Allahabad

Central Organisation for Railway Electrification (CORE) was set up in 1979 under the Ministry of Railways, at Allahabad. The responsibility entrusted was to carryout railway electrification over the entire network of Indian Railways.

The organization is headed by a General Manager. It has various project units namely: Ambala, Lucknow, Kota, Secunderabad, Chennai, Bhubaneshwar, Gorakhpur, New Jalpaigudi and Hajipur. These units are in the process of electrifying important Railway routes for harnessing maximum benefits from their traffic potential. As of now a
bout 60.2% of freight and 50.5% of passenger traffic is hauled by electric traction on Indian Railways.

During 11th Five Year Plan (2007-12) 4,556 Route Kilometer (RKM) of Railway Track has been energised against the target of 4,500 RKM. As on 31.03.2012, total electrified RKM stands at 22,224. During the financial year 2011-12, 804 RKM has been energised on 2.2 kV and 801 RKM has been converted from 2.2 kV to 25 kV.

As of now, 5131 RKM electrification work is under progress.
