Direct recruitment to posts and services in Class I and Class II in Railways is made through Union Public Service Commission. The posts of Assistants, Stenographers and Clerks in the Ministry of Railways are filled through Staff Selection Commission. Recruitment to Class III posts in various departments of Railways is done through various competitive examinations conducted by the respective Railway Recruitment Boards.
These Boards are located at 19 important towns. They advertise the vacancies through newspapers and Employment News. The details of some of these posts are given in the following table:

Indian Railways have their own schools and hospitals. RRBs also recruit teachers, physical instructors, nurses and para-medical personnel through written tests. The pay scales are based on the requirement of posts.
Note
(i) Normally there will be a written test and Interview. However, Railway Recruitment Board, at its discretion, may hold additional written test (s) and/or Interview(s) if considered necessary, for all or a limited number of candidates as may be deemed fit.
(ii) Admission to the written examination is provisional as the applications are fully scrutinized later. In case a candidate does not fulfill all the requirements prescribed in the Employment Notice, his/her candidature is liable to be rejected even at a later stage when the deficiency is noticed.
(iii) Candidates have the option to reply in English or Hindi at the time of Interview who satisfy the eligibility criteria are called in order of merit for the Interview. Final selection is based on the total marks obtained in the Written test and Interview.
